m-Learning authoring tools

If you design and build learning content, you may be interested in this comparison of authoring tools for mobile learning. The comparison of selected tools that we provide below is based on our experience, therefore somewhat subjective. It is offered here as a guide and a starting point for discussion.

Our approach

For each tool, we assess its strengths and weaknesses in terms of core features, technical properties, and business cases performing sort of SWOT analysis. Each analyzed component is graded on a 1-5 scale.  The individual scores are then summed up to compare the overall results for all selected tools. We will extend this list over time and add new tools will be assessed using the same methodology.

Pro and Suite

version: 7.1

price: Pro $297, Suite $697

´┐╝iSpring flag tool converts standard PowerPoint presentations into HTML5 and Flash outputs for online and mobile delivery. In a full suite, additional tools are available for interactive quizzes and presentation to YouTube conversion. It also offers a broad choice of interactions and characters. The content produced by iSpring is scalable but not responsive. The playback controller options are limited but they are dynamically displayed/resized based on device types and display sizes. iSpring does not allow for publishing to SCORM and xAPI at same time. The biggest issue with iSpring, however, is the limited pedagogical framework. Publishing a presentation on the web and even making it work on mobile devices is not what we consider mobile learning, it might be one of numerous approaches to teaching, learning and training using mobile devices but a deck of slides does not equate to mobile learning.
